To begin the new academic/formation session, the Seminary of Saints Peter and Paul held its inaugural ceremonies on Friday, 4th of October, 2024. The inaugural ceremonies began with the Mass of the Holy Spirit, presided over by an erstwhile Rector of the institution, Most Rev Dr. Francis Obafemi Adesina, Bishop of Ijebu-Ode diocese, with over thirty concelebrating priests. The Mass, which began by 8 am in the Seminary Chapel, was attended by seminarians of Saints Peter and Paul Major Seminary and also seminarians from sister religious houses who receive lectures at the Seminary. Members of the academic as well as non-academic staff were also present.
In his homily, the Bishop appreciated the formators and members of staff for their work and service in forming young men for the sacred and celibate priesthood. He harped on the need to harmonize the four pillars of formation today, spiritual, intellectual, human, and pastoral, in order to produce well-balanced and all-rounded candidates for the priesthood. The former Rector (and now part of the Proprietors) of the institution looked at the challenges of the priesthood in contemporary times and held that formation today must take note of the changing world, without compromising the Gospel and stand of the Church. He encouraged seminarians to be always prepared and learn how to use modern media for the propagation of the gospel. He also reminded seminarians that though in the world, they were not of the world.
All Formators present took the Oath of Fidelity during the eucharistic celebration. The second part of the inaugural ceremonies continued in the auditorium after the Mass with the inaugural paper, “Fidelity to Christ and to His Church: Preparing For the Mission of Service and Love”, delivered by Very Rev Fr. Francis Adedara and moderated by Very Rev. Fr Richard Omolade. The well-researched paper attracted a robust engagement after its delivery. The focus of the 2024/2025 formation session, PRESENCE AND OPENNESS TO FORMATION THROUGH TRANSPARENCY, SINCERITY AND DOCILITY TO THE HOLY SPIRIT, was stressed during the ceremonies.
